This is our son Kaelan, he’s in 9th grade.
Kaelan had a dance to go to.
The dance had a theme.
The theme was “famous couples.”
Kaelan and his date chose to be Han Solo and Princess Leia.
Kaelan procrastinated on buying a costume online.
Kaelan asked me for help 3 days before the dance.
I wanted to say, “no, I’m too busy, I don’t have enough time!”
I hesitated but said, “yes.”
It is hard to say “no” to Kaelan, he’s such a sweetheart.
Here is the inspiration photo.
Here’s how I executed the costume in 3 days. (No pressure, sheesh!)
1. Googled for images and patterns
Found this awesome girl, Emily who shared how she made the costume on her blog. Click here to check it out. Her blog is called The Stylish Geek. I found a lot of inspiration from her, even though there wasn’t really a pattern per se.
2. Went to the thrift and fabric store and bought supplies.
I thrifted: A blazer, shirt, slacks, leather coat, 2 belts and boots. $40
I purchased from JoAnn’s: red bias tape, fabric marker, leather punch, rivets, and fabric dye. $30
Here is Kaelan wearing the clothes in their original, thrifted condition. Pretty classy, huh?
3. Time to get creative
I transformed the blazer into a vest.
Kaelan turned the bias tape into the stripe for the pants.
I deconstructed the leather coat and made the holster.
I modified the white shirt.
I dyed the vest from navy to black.
Voila! Just in time for the dance!
I ran out of time (imagine that?) to make all the cool belt buckles and compartments. Not to mention that we didn’t have a blaster on hand… Although, I don’t think that would go over so well at a school function!
Just a little side-by-side before and after comparison.
Now…. The bonus feature! It fits me! Although, it looks a lot better on him.
I’m ready for Halloween next year!
“May the force be with you.”
