One Room Challenge… Home Office, Week 1

One Room Challenge… Home Office, Week 1featured

Hi friends!!  Oh boy, this last 6 months has been crazy… A couple of home and commercial business remodels, a handful of surgeries, and the filming of a pilot episode for HGTV!  It’s been nuts, really!  But I have to say, it’s been mostly good, sans the surgeries of my family members of course.  Anyway, I have not posted anything on my blog since June!  I’ve missed writing and sharing with you guys.

Today I found the motivation to get moving on project in our house that has been on the back-burner for a few years… Styling and organizing our home office!  While perusing Instagram, it was brought to my attention that it’s that time of year again that the fall One Room Challenge has begun.  If you’ve never heard of the One Room Challenge, you can click here to get a fully detailed description of what it is and how to participate in it if you’re interested.  Basically, it’s a challenge for interior designers and bloggers to attempt to re-do a room in their house or a client’s house in just 6 weeks. They share their progress weekly on their blog and by linking their post to the official page on the Calling It Home website.  I participated in this event last fall on our master bedroom and found that the challenge was just the motivation that I needed to address our neglected bedroom and it was fun to connect with other bloggers and watch their progress, too.

So, let’s just get right to it.  I’ve decided to tackle our home office because #1 we spend a lot of time in there and #2 it’s a horribly disorganized disaster most of the time.  My husband, Patrick, and I both base our work from home.  He is a real estate broker and investor, and I run our little family owned construction company.  We spend a lot of time in the office and sadly haven’t spent any time setting it up to function in a more organized, less chaotic way.  Also, it’s never really been decorated.  The pictures on the wall have been in those frames for almost 10 years now and have been hung in the last 6 houses that we’ve lived in.  So one day, after about 2 years of living in our “not new anymore” house and working in the office with nothing on the wall, I just decided to take the pictures out of the cardboard box hang them up randomly.  I never really liked the way it looked, but as I’ve said before, I get complacent about decorating.

Anyway, this is not a very exciting post, but I wanted to share the before pictures with you guys.  This coming week, I will share some of my ideas for the space.  Meanwhile, here are some pictures of what we call, “mission control” at our house…today…as is…messy and disheveled!  I didn’t even tidy up for ya…  Try not to judge me;)

So as you can see, there are a few major issues going on here that need to be addressed in this project.

2. Decoration…

3. Storage solutions…

The space is pretty small, 10′ wide by 12′ long from door to window wall.  Also, Patrick’s desk is built in so it can’t be moved.  My budget is pretty small, like a couple to a few hundred bucks, so this project is going to mostly consist of paint and a few DIY projects….and lots of my time.  Wish me luck!
